JAA’s tutoring programs for men, women and youth are part of a free and easily accessible educational service for newly-arrived refugees to help reduce the current linguistic, social and cultural barriers and promote cultural sharing and relationships.Men’s Group Assisting Darfuri men to learn English & pre-employment skills in a safe non-threatening environment amongst the support of their friends.
Women’s GroupThis program aims to assist refugee women and their children in social interaction, English language and settlement into their local community. Most of the women participating in this project are pre-literate, unable to read or write in their own language & suffer from isolation. This group provides the women with the opportunity to interact with their friends, and for their children to have opportunity to play and learn new skills. High School Tutoring JAA volunteers work 1:1 with students from years 7-12 in a relaxed environment in the local library close to their homes in Preston. Maths and science are the key areas that are focused on, and these workshops take place weekly. Employment Project Providing newly arrived refugee men & women with pre-employment skills, formalised training and interview skills as preparation for entering the workforce. It is through successful employment that these community members have the chance to integrate into Australian society, while being able to financially support their family back home & improve their feelings of self worth. The program is called the Sudanese Employment and Empowerment Division (SEED).
