Civil war has raged off and on since 1956 in Sudan. It has left about 2 million people dead & 4 million internally displaced. The conflict is complicated, but it essentially stems from the range of causes and beliefs in Sudan. Once refugees flee Sudan they generally seek refuge in large refugee camps in East Africa including Kenya, Uganda, & in Egypt. From there they are accepted into Australia as part of our ‘offshore’ humanitarian program. The refugee experience disrupts families in many ways, many mothers are alone because their husbands have been killed or are missing. Some children may be living with aunts & uncles, older siblings or other extended family members. Many children have never attended school or have had very little education, traveling through many countries to escape war and living in refugee camps. According to the ABS the Sudanese is the faster growing ethnic group in Australia. How can you get involved: 1. Organise a one-off sports day for the Sudanese children. This day can include: sports skills eg. basketball, soccer, athletics etc.; lunch or afternoon tea with time to demonstrate some Jewish culture through certain foods, music, songs etc. Sports goods could be collected, either new or second hand, and given out to the children at the end of the program. 2. Volunteer with the Women’s or Men’s Groups to help the Sudanese practice their English, learn about our culture and share a cup of coffee 3. Volunteer to assist in “The Refugees’ Employment Support Initiative”. This project is designed to help newly arrived refugees undertake pre-employment training - by assisting in writing resumes and helping analyse their skills to find the best job opportunities. |
