Jewish Aid Australia was instrumental in setting up One Umbrella and now continues to support the organisation. One Umbrella is a leading food rescue organisation dedicated to helping reduce the cause of hunger and food insecurity in Australia.

Consisting of committed volunteers, One Umbrella actively engages in rescuing surplus food that would otherwise go to waste. It aims to provide safe, nutritious and excellent quality food to agencies (through free delivery) that already support the underprivileged through soup kitchens and vans, homeless shelters and other similar services.  In fact they produce in excess of 4,500 meals per week, totaling over 200,000+ meals/year, giving food on a regular basis to around 40 different agencies. One Umbrella also educates the public on the issue of hunger and its cause and to raise awareness of food wastage and the needs of the hungry.

A new initiative that we are hoping to expand is a project collects, sorts and re-packs the packaged foods not touched on hospital trays in a private hospital. These are then used for Breakfast Clubs for disadvantaged students in primary schools. The packs for families include: tea and coffee; and for the children, cereals, fruit juice and juice

How can you get involved:

1. Organise a team of volunteer cooks to work in the One Umbrella kitchen

2. Become part of a team that helps collect and sort the food from hospitals

3. Organise a fund raiser to help support the work we are doing with One Umbrella
