Jewish Aid Australia is a coalition member of the MAKE POVERTY HISTORY campaign.

The campaign calls world leaders to honour their commitments to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, an eight-point plan for tackling poverty.

JAA will undertake educational programs and advocacy to highlight the need of the Australian Jewish community to be actively involved in the MPH campaign and to increase awareness that we all have the capacity to make a difference through the actions in our own lives—whether that is engaging in debate on the issues, volunteering on a program, providing material aid or raising money to assist in the delivery of a program.

Text Box: Living In Harmony Project—Employment Forums

We hosted our inaugural Employment Forums— a new initiative that aims to promote cultural diversity
in the Australian workforce—in July 2007. Newly arrived refugees from the Horn of Africa had an
opportunity to interact and share their experiences with the wider Australian community.

The Forum had speakers from refugee communities, employers, WorkCover Authority and many others.

The topics covered included:

· Creating a greater understanding of cultural issues and experiences of the Australian workforce

· Sharing ideas and knowledge by both employers and employees

· Ensuring harmony, diversity and longevity in the workforce

· Opening up any job opportunities for the newly arrived refugees from the Horn of Africa

· Exploring training, systems and processes that need to be established to ensure successful sustainable employment

Forum dates were: Wednesday 18th July in Footscray & Wednesday 25th July in Dandenong
