Key Milestones

Some key milestones for JAA have been:

2006: JAA becomes founding member of Victorian Relief + Food Bank
We established a Food Rescue program in partnership with Cabrini Hospital.
We also piloted new programs with Hanover Welfare Services & CentaCARE such as ‘computer training’ programs, life skills workshops and pre-employment services.
JAA receives Federal Government funding, in partnership with CentaCARE and Victoria
University of Technology, under the “Living In Harmony” program.

2004/05: JAA undertook two major appeals for:
Sudanese Refugees and for the victims of the Boxing Day Tsunami.

2004: JAA began work with CentaCARE Footscray on projects for the
Horn of African communities in Melbourne’s Western suburbs.
These on-going programs include sewing classes, youth sports days and peer student tutoring.

2003: JAA joined City of Port Phillip “Friends of Suai” committee as a way for moving our international assistance away from emergency response and closer to long term development work - particular projects focusing on a very needy area of East Timor

2001: JAA jointly founded a new charity “One Umbrella” to promote the idea of “food rescue”, the collection of unserved or donated food for the production of meals for the homeless and hungry of Melbourne.  This is an on-going program, which in 2005 produced in excess of 250,000 meals.

2000: JAA began a long-term relationship with Hanover Welfare Services to provide volunteer-based activities focused on working with their Families Unit. Over the past 5 years we have establish a quarterly ‘families picnic’ program, helped develop a “student tutoring program” and now provides tutor/mentors on a weekly basis for ‘student tutoring’ program. 

2000: JAA held several appeals for Kosovo & East Timor refugees

1996: Koori Education – JAA ran a breakfast program, cultural and sports exchanges between Northlands Secondary College (a State government school in inner-Melbourne with a significant Koori population) and the Jewish day schools of Melbourne.

1995: Melbourne Homeless Youth – JAA was involved in the touring of a play written and directed by a homeless youth with actors from various Jewish schools.

1994: Organisation established with our first major appeal for Rwandan Refugees.
